Target: Kate Brown, Governor of Oregon
Goal: Stop exposing forest industry workers to illegal and hazardous herbicides.
Forest industry workers in Oregon are being exposed to toxic chemicals by weed-spraying crews who are allegedly illegally circumventing health and safety regulations. Videos taken by a whistleblower working with one of these crews show a helicopter repeatedly dumping large amounts of harmful herbicides on areas occupied by laborers. After being exposed to the chemicals, the whistleblower reported health problems such as irritated skin and bloody phlegm.
The chemicals used by the forest industry are known to have adverse effects on humans as well as the weeds they are designed to kill. One, called 2,4-D causes dizziness when inhaled and can be corrosive to the skin. Hexazinone, another chemical identified in the video, can cause permanent damage to the eyes upon contact. When whistleblower Darryl Ivy confronted his superiors about the issue, he was allegedly told that the chemicals were harmless.
Not only did the pilot fail to follow health and safety regulations, the crew that Mr. Ivy worked with also blatantly ignored state pollution laws. One member was reportedly recorded rinsing a container used to carry chemical pollutants in a stream, while another drove a truck dripping with toxic chemicals through neighborhoods, campgrounds, and near waterways. A plethora of complaints about irresponsible and unlawful herbicide-spraying practices have been filed in Oregon.
These practices are not only illegal, but could result in serious and irreversible harm to the workers, residents, and animals that come into contact with incorrectly-sprayed herbicide. Unfortunately, the Oregon government has so far done little to address this ongoing problem. Sign the petition below to demand that the government implement increased regulation and oversight of the forest industry before more people are harmed.
Dear Governor Kate Brown,
A whistleblower recently released a series of nearly 200 videos allegedly detailing extensive illegal practices in the forest industry, including helicopter pilots spraying herbicide directly onto workers. These chemicals are harmful to humans and can cause skin irritation and irreversible damage to the eyes.
Despite this being illegal, several complaints have been filed against herbicide carriers who contaminate living areas, waterways, and campgrounds. So far, these complaints have been left unaddressed and the forestry industry has continued its actions unchecked. We, the undersigned, demand that the government step in to increase enforcement of forestry laws in order to protect the health of Oregon residents.
