Target: President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China
Goal: Release political prisoner taken from his family at a young age.
Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was taken by Chinese authorities at the age of six, and he has not been seen or heard from again. This incident took place shortly after the Dalai Lama anointed the boy as the eleventh Panchen Lama. Nobody except Chinese authorities know what happened to the boy, and it is presumed that he was taken into custody to control the future of Tibet. The Communist Party in China then designated a new Panchen Lama named Gyaincain Norbu, but Buddhists have largely rejected him as the real Panchen Lama, according to a report in NPR. It is believed that Norbu was designated as a puppet figure who would pose no political threat to the Communist Party. It is said that the Chinese have deprived him from his rightful religious upbringing in order to prevent him from empowering Tibetans.
Although it’s questionable whether Nyima is even alive anymore, the Chinese government at least owes an explanation to the family of Nyima and the Tibetan people. At most, they should release him back to his family. He would be around the age of 26 now. Regardless of his religious status, the fact remains that he was stolen from his family at a very young age, and he deserves to go back to them.
Sign this petition to tell Chinese president Xi Jinping that you would like the see the release of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima.
Dear President Jinping,
Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was taken from his family when he was just six years old, and he has not been seen since. He was taken by Chinese authorities after the Dalai Lama anointed him as the eleventh Panchen Lama, and it is believed by many that he was taken by your government in order to influence the future of Tibet. This makes him, in effect, a political prisoner. Since he was taken as a six-year-old boy, this makes him one of the youngest political prisoners ever.
The conflict between the Chinese Communist Party and the Tibetan people stretches back many decades, and I believe that the time has come for your country to work with the Tibetan people to develop real solutions that are satisfactory to both sides. I ask that you please release Gedhun Choekyi Nyima back to his family and religious community, try to make peace with the Tibetan people, and work to end this old conflict by extending them a peace offering. I believe that this could boost worldwide respect for your country and neutralize a potentially volatile situation.
