Target: Lapeer County Prosecutor Tim Turkelson

Goal: Prosecute man accused of shooting his dog in the back of the head with a bow and arrow.

A man in Michigan allegedly shot his dog in the back of the head with a bow and arrow. According to MLive, a site dedicated to reporting news in the state of Michigan, the dog was a two year old retriever mix named Gemma. Gemma had allegedly attacked another dog, which prompted the owner to shoot her. The arrow smashed through her skull, narrowly missing her brain and optic nerve. Gemma promptly ran off, undoubtedly fearful.

A good Samaritan named Jim O’Dell spotted Gemma with the arrow still lodged in her skull and contacted animal control. O’Dell says: “She crawled over to me, as if to say, ‘Can you help me out?’” He waited with Gemma, petting her until animal control arrived. “She just had a good nature about her,” O’Dell says. The dog was taken to a veterinarian to have the arrow removed, and she is expected to be okay.

The incident has angered many people in the community, as well as around the country. A warrant has been issued which charges the man with one count of torturing animals. This charge is punishable by up to four years in prison and a fine of $5,000. By going through with this charge, local authorities will be sending a clear message to others that you can’t do these types of things without being held accountable. There was no valid justification for the man’s behavior. If his aim was to put the dog down, he should have taken it to a veterinarian who can properly and humanely euthanize an animal.

No animal should have to endure such suffering. Sign this petition to encourage Lapeer County Prosecutor Tim Turkelson to throw the book at the person responsible.

Dear Mr. Turkelson,

As you might have heard, a man in Lapeer County allegedly shot his dog in the back of the head with a bow and arrow. The arrow tore through the dog’s skull and nearly hit her brain and optic nerve. The dog, named Gemma, was found by a good Samaritan and taken to a veterinarian. The arrow was removed and Gemma is expected to recover.

I believe that this cruel act is deserving of a hefty penalty. No animal should have to go through such a horrifying ordeal. Dogs are sensitive creatures who often trust humans, and that trust should never be betrayed. I would like to urge you to do everything in your power to ensure that justice is done.
