Target: Mr. Ashton Carter, United States Secretary of Defense
Goal: Punish generals responsible for wasting millions of dollars on unnecessary military projects.
The United States Army wasted upwards of $30 million on a command center in Afghanistan that was never, and will never, be used. Multiple Army officials warned that the building would be unnecessary and that the current facilities in use were more than ample, yet a small group of high ranking officials overruled attempts to cancel the building project. Those responsible also attempted to stall an investigation into the matter and have not faced any consequences for wasting millions of taxpayer dollars.
Military waste and overspending have become rampant over the course of the last decade, from the federal government spending $1.5 trillion on a fighter jet that still doesn’t work to spending $3,500 an hour for drone flights. This money doesn’t simply come out of mid-air–it is collected from every U.S. citizen who pays their taxes. Many of those citizens object to their tax dollars being spent on weapons to kill and maim, but all stand united in their objection to their money simply being thrown away.
Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa said, “This is a classic example of Pentagon waste. Spending money for the sake of spending it.” Eisenhower warned of the military-industrial complex but it seems as if his words mostly fell on deaf ears. The United States cannot afford to keep spending trillions of dollars on military hardware that could just as easily be spent on caring for an aging population, revamping a public school system in dire need of reform, or even fixing a dilapidated infrastructure. Sign here to demand that the Secretary of Defense punish those responsible for this colossal waste and ensure that nothing like this happens again.
Dear Secretary Carter,
It has come to my attention that several high ranking military officials are responsible for wasting millions of taxpayer dollars on a command center that will never be used. This kind of waste is absolutely unacceptable and I am writing to demand that you seek out those responsible for it and punish them as they have faced no consequences to date.
This $36 million didn’t come out of thin air. True, Congress appropriated it, but that does not mean that it needed to be spent. Senator Chuck Grassley has said, “This is a classic example of Pentagon waste. Spending money for the sake of spending it.” Numerous Generals advised against this command center and yet it was built. Is that something you want the Department of Defense to be known for?
Many U.S. citizens take issue with their tax dollars being spent to build weapons that kill people, but all stand united in their objection to their money simply being thrown away on a useless building. Please find those responsible and punish them accordingly.
