Target: Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker
Goal: Outlaw discrimination against transgender and other gender nonconforming persons.
Massachusetts will once again have the opportunity to create protections for trans and gender nonconforming people by amending its laws in the next legislation session. Currently, there are 17 states in the U.S. that have supported the right for individuals to safely express their gender identity. Massachusetts currently has no laws to protect its non-cisgender population, leaving many men, women, intersex individuals and even children vulnerable to verbal assault and distress.
Transgender people are frequently harassed in public. Creating laws that protect this community among the public is the first step toward correcting a serious social issue, as trans individuals are nine times more likely to inflict self harm upon themselves or attempt suicide. That’s 47% of the community, nearly half, that are constantly pushed to the edge of their lives. The transgender community needs more protection legally in order to create a sense of safety and reassurance as they live their lives.
The bill granting these protections in Massachusetts has widespread support, with about 70 legislative co-sponsors. The next best thing is the support of the public. Sign this petition to let the governor of Massachusetts know that trans rights matter to you.
Dear Governor Charlie Baker,
It saddens me that your state does not have any protections in place for the transgender community. Every day the non-cisgender individuals in Massachusetts are at risk of assault and harassment. This constant struggle attributes to high rates of suicide and self-harm among the trans community. An incredible 47% of trans people commit acts of self-harm or suicide. This is unacceptable, and as governor it is important that you do what you can to support the lives of innocent citizens within your state.
No one should have to fear leaving their home because of taunting and bigotry. Your advocacy for this bill could change that for a lot of people, or at the very least start Massachusetts on the path to something better. At least 17 other states have already shown their support for the underserved trans community in their respective states. It’s now your turn to show the same kindness and respect by amending your laws so that trans people are protected outright from harmful and discriminatory actions.
Do not allow another legislative session to go by in the state of Massachusetts without enabling protections for the trans community.
