Target: Corporal James Spadola, Newark Police Department
Goal: Thank cops for embracing the community and for working hard to change how people view police officers.
Police officers in Delaware took the time to socialize with community members, despite their busy schedules. Because of their hard work and dedication, more cops and citizens may soon be shaking hands instead of standing behind divided lines.
With all of the bad news surrounding cops lately, police officers in Delaware decided something needed to be done to change how cops were viewed in society. It was from here that #HugACop was born.
In order to try to establish healthy relationships with community members, Corporal James Spadola and Officer Aaron Olicker walked around the city of Newark with signs that said “Free Hugs.” Even though some people declined, many more people were happy to accept their genuine offer. When asked about the reasoning behind the hugs, Corporal James Spadola expressed that he wanted to set aside “a positive time” for policemen and community members.
While cops walking around giving people hugs may not seem like a big deal, it is when you take into account all of the protests and altercations that have lately gone on between cops and citizens. Sign this petition to thank these fine officers for all of their hard work and efforts. More cop-citizen hugs just may lead to less gunshots, and that’s a big deal.
Dear Corporal Spadola,
Although you have massive amounts of work to do on a daily basis, you took the time to get to know the people living in your community. By setting such an excellent example, it is possible that cops and citizens around the country will soon be seeing more “eye to eye.”
Since so many horrible tragedies have divided cops and citizens around America, policemen and community members being on good terms with each other is of the upmost importance. By offering hugs to citizens, you not only showed that establishing strong community relations is important to you, you also helped to change the horrible image that many great cops now unfortunately face. You set an excellent example for other police officers around the country, and we certainly hope that you have started a trend.
Giving free hugs may seem like a small gesture. However, please know that we as the human rights community see it as an important step to bridge the gap between hard working officers and citizens.
Please know that we applaud your community spirit and that we will continue to support your openness to become involved with the people you serve. If more cops showed this type of love to their communities, it is quite possible that crime rates would drop and cooperation between citizens and police officers would greatly improve. Thank you again for your outstanding efforts.
