Target: Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson
Goal: Don’t charge Tamir Rice’s family for the keeping of the child’s body for a six-month police investigation.
The family of Tamir Rice has been handed an $18,000 bill by the morgue that held the 12-year-old’s body for six months during the police investigation into Rice’s death at the hands of a cop. Not only did this family have to suffer through the death of a young child and wait through a long investigation after the police officer who shot him was accused of unnecessary force and murder before they could have the body cremated and get some closure, they’re now being told they’re responsible for paying for a necessary aspect of the investigation.
The only reason that this morgue had to hold Tamir Rice’s body for so long is because there was video footage showing a police officer shooting a non-threatening child just a couple short seconds after exiting the cop car. This, along with a long list of witnessed and video-taped incidents of alleged extreme police brutality resulting in unnecessary death, suggests a huge problem with our nation’s law enforcement. This is a flaw in government, and it’s the local government that should be paying this bill, not the grieving family of a dead 12-year-old.
Tamir Rice’s family has been completely devastated by his death. His mother now lives in a homeless shelter because she can’t bear to be living next to the park where her son was shot. There is no way she can afford this bill, and it should never have been given to her in the first place. Sign this petition to demand that the city of Cleveland pay the bill for its own investigation into its own problems.
Dear Mayor Jackson,
The family of Tamir Rice was just handed a bill for $18,000 because the city of Cleveland held his body for six months for an investigation made necessary by the actions of one of your police officers. This is absolutely unacceptable. The family of the 12-year-old boy who was shot down while playing in a park has gone through enough hardship. Now they’re expected to pay a huge bill for part of an investigation that no family should ever have to endure.
All aspects of the investigation, mandated by the government you oversee, should be the city’s responsibility. It’s shameful that this bill was ever put into the hands of Tamir Rice’s family. The child’s mother is already living in a homeless shelter because she can’t live next to the park where her son died and can’t afford to live anywhere else.
You must immediately contact the family and let them know that the city of Cleveland will be paying the bill. Take responsibility for your police force and the investigations necessitated by the actions of your officers.
