Commend Efforts to Save Endangered Species

Target: Association of Zoos and Aquariums President, Jim Maddy

Goal: Commend launch of the SAFE program, designed to help preserve the world’s endangered species.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums recently announced its launch of a new program called Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE). This international effort includes the commitment from 228 zoos, aquariums, and oceanariums in the U.S. and in seven other countries. SAFE requires that the association add 10 endangered species every year, and each partner is committed for 10 years.

The intent of SAFE is to preserve the most endangered species in the world, and to make plans for their care so that they can grow and prosper safely. In 2015, the program will focus on some of the most endangered animals in the world, including African penguins, black rhinos, Asian elephants, cheetahs, gorillas, sea turtles, vaquitas, sharks and rays, western pond turtles, and whooping cranes. For example, vaquitas, which is a small porpoise, have been diminished to only about 80 in the world. They are so rare that there are few pictures of them.

Zoos and aquariums have been preserving endangered species for years. This includes black-footed ferrets, California condors, and desert fishes. Zoos and aquariums are often the source of information about animals to the public, and this program can enhance public awareness and continue to educate on their preservation.

This coordinated international effort to preserve endangered species may be the only medium to save them. If action is not taken, some or all of these animals will die out. Commend this effort to preserve the most vulnerable creatures, and to support their continuing efforts in this project.

Dear President Maddy,

Entire species are being wiped out each year. If action is not taken, more endangered species will continue to die out completely. Zoos and aquariums have acted as a safe haven for many endangered species, and have assisted to save and preserve many animals over the years.

I would like to commend the launch of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums SAFE program. This program will connect 228 zoos, aquariums, and oceanariums with some of the world’s most endangered species. Ten animals each year will be added to the program, and it will assist in keeping the animals safe in the most comfortable environment possible. This year, it will include animals such as cheetahs, gorillas, and the extremely endangered vaquitas.

Thank you for your efforts in preserving endangered species. I applaud the steps you are taking to save the world’s most vulnerable creatures.
