Target: The Republic of Ireland
Goal: Thank Ireland for voting yes to same-sex marriage and making LGBT civil rights history.
On May 22, 2015, the people of Ireland voted yes to same-sex marriage in their country. With this win for equality, Ireland has become the first country to grant gay marriage protections through popular vote, with an impressive victory of more than 62% voting in favor of marriage equality.
This vote for same-sex marriage has changed the Constitution of Ireland. The new referendum has added protections to same-sex unions, giving them the same status as traditional male-female marriages. Those legal protections will also be given to LGBT families.
Although civil unions have been legal since 2010, this new vote solidifies the rights of the LGBT community to get married and have families, rights that can no longer be threatened or taken away by government action. Same-sex marriage is now legal in 20 countries.
A big thank you goes out to the 1,201,607 people who showed up and casted their votes for the equal rights amendment and the many petitions, like the ones on ForceChange, that brought attention to this cause. Doing the right thing and bringing about a change in Ireland will surely resonate with the rest of the world, furthering historic change.
Please support this historic decision in Ireland by signing this petition.
Dear Republic of Ireland,
Thank you for making a wise choice in favor of marriage equality in your country. You voted yes, and now your decision has put you in the LGBT history books as the first country to grant legal protections to same-sex couples and families through popular vote. Please take this achievement with you as you celebrate the protected freedoms all your citizens can now enjoy.
This message of unity in the face of bigotry will surely ring out across the globe as you join more than a dozen other countries that have granted protections to same-sex couples. Many LGBT families can be more secure in their love as they are granted the same rights as straight couples. Over 1 million people stood up and spoke out for a disenfranchised portion of their society.
To amend your country’s Constitution says a lot about Ireland’s commitment to equality and is sure to inspire others as well.
Thank you once again for being a trail blazer in equal rights. Please continue your progressive thinking and continue onward towards a more tolerant world.
