Stop Driving LGBT Youth to Suicide

LGBT rights

Target: Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner

Goal: Ban mental health professionals from using conversion therapy on LGBT minors.

Ignorant, misguided parents might soon be barred from forcing their LGBT children into “conversion therapy” in the state of Illinois if legislation currently under consideration is approved. Minors subjected to this sham treatment are too often driven to self-harm and suicide. Demand that this proposal be signed into law at once.

Conversion therapy is an ostensible mental health practice that is based on the idea that LGBT people can be “cured” of their sexual orientations or gender identities. The treatment has been long-since discredited and denounced by the medical, psychological, and psychiatric establishments.

Unfortunately, that has not stopped the practice from gaining popularity in conservative Christian circles, where parents with religious disagreements with their children’s sexual orientations or genders often force them into the treatment. The process is so shaming that the kids are often driven to cut themselves or even commit suicide.

The treatment is dangerous and outdated and cannot be allowed to continue. Sign the petition below to demand that Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner give his signature of approval to the legislation that would ban conversion therapy for the safety of all the LGBT minors in his state.

Dear Governor Rauner,

I am writing you today regarding House Bill 217, a proposal that easily passed your state’s House and is now being discussed in the Senate. It will in all likelihood arrive on your desk in the near future, and when that happens, I urge you to sign it into law immediately.

House Bill 217 would ban mental health practitioners from using “conversion therapy” on clients under 18 years of age. Put in less technical language, it would prevent bigoted, ignorant parents from forcing their LGBT children into a discredited and dangerous form of therapy in hopes of “curing” them of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The psychological establishment has been denouncing conversion therapy as intensely dangerous and based on false premises for years. The ostensible therapeutic process is so shaming to gay and transgender people that they often come out of the therapy with episodes of depression. In some cases, this depression can even lead to self-harm and suicide.

Conversion therapy is legitimately dangerous and puts the lives of countless LGBT people in your state at risk. I urge you to sign House Bill 217 into law when it arrives on your desk so that Illinois’ youth can never again be forced into this harmful therapy.

There is no such thing as “conversion therapy.” People who believe that this works and therefore engage in it are not only fooling themselves … but also unnecessarily and de monstrously hurting others. These so-called Christians are misguided, ignorant, extremely uneducated and bigoted MORONS !!!!!!!!!!
