Target: New York District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr.
Goal: End sexual abuse in prisons.
Two women who had been imprisoned at Riker’s Island in New York have filed a lawsuit against the Department of Corrections and a corrections officer saying that they were raped by the officer on several occasions.
The two victims, who have not been named, claim that Benny Santiago repeatedly raped them inside of the prison and threatened to hurt their families if they reported him. Worse, his actions were known by others in the Department of Corrections but nothing was done. One of the victims even reported the rape to her doctor with the City Department of Investigation but was told that nothing could be done about it.
This abuse is barbaric and must end. Urge the District Attorney to prosecute Benny Santiago if he is found guilty in order to dissuade corrections officers from committing further abuse.
Dear New York District Attorney Cyrus Vance,
Two former inmates at Riker’s Island have filed a suit claiming that Benny Santiago, a corrections officer, raped them on numerous occasions and that they were told nothing could be done about it when it was reported. It was also reported that Santiago’s actions were well-known yet no one on staff did anything to prevent it.
The alleged behavior by Santiago is barbaric and cannot be tolerated in the Department of Corrections. In order to show that New York will not tolerate this type of behavior and to prevent similar situations from happening in the future, we the undersigned urge you to give Santiago the most severe punishment possible if he is found guilty.
