Target: Oregon Governor Kate Brown
Goal: Thank Oregon’s leadership for banning conversion therapy for minors in the state.
LGBT youth will no longer be forced into therapy aimed at “curing” them of their identities and sexual orientations in Oregon thanks to legislation that was just signed into law by Governor Kate Brown. Applaud the governor for enacting this historic ban.
“Conversion therapy” is a farcical treatment designed, ostensibly, to convert gay and transgender people to heterosexuality and cisgender identities. The practice is popular with conservative Christian communities who often force their young people into it if they identify with LGBT orientations or genders. Unfortunately, the treatment is so shaming that young people undergoing it are often driven to self-harm and suicide.
In light of this sad reality, a nationwide campaign to get the treatment banned for minors has been gaining momentum. Thanks in no small part to those here at ForceChange, as well as other activists who would not abide the continuation of this tortuous practice, Oregon has become the third state in the country to institute such a ban.
The fight for the right of LGBT people to live their lives in peace and without fear of cultural and physical violence is ongoing, but we can take small comfort in this state-level victory. Sign the petition below to express gratitude to Governor Kate Brown for doing the right thing and signing this ban into law.
Dear Governor Brown,
I am writing you today regarding the ban you recently signed into law on conversion therapy for minors. I wanted to take the time to thank you for doing the right thing.
Conversion therapy is dangerous. It shames people, tells them that they are invalid and that something is wrong with them, and forces them to deny their own identities. This onslaught can easily lead to self harm and suicide, especially in young people who are forced into the treatment against their will for no reason but the bigotry and ignorance of their parents.
Since the likelihood of a national youth conversion ban is so small given the Republican control of our legislature, it falls to the states to do what they can to protect their citizens and keep them out of harm’s way. You, by signing this ban, have become the third state in the country to take a stand and say that this violence will not be allowed. If other states followed your lead we would all be better off.
This is a historic milestone for you and your state. Thank you for doing the right thing and banning the use of conversion therapy on Oregon’s youth.
