Target: Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn
Goal: Applaud Nissan for attempting to put a self-driving car on the market.
Nissan has announced that they will be able to sell a self-driving car by 2020, according to an article in ABC News. Although this is a technology that’s still in its infancy, it should be pursued since it has the capacity to solve a plethora of issues that we face on the roads today.
When this technology is perfected and put on the roads, it will be an excellent solution to problems such as driver fatigue, distracted driving, and driving under the influence. This will have huge implications for public health; computers are much less prone to error than humans, and when this technology is widely used, there is a potential for the number of traffic accidents to be greatly reduced.
In addition, you have to consider the fact that computers in self-driving cars could be programmed to stay below the allotted speed limit. Not only would this increase the safety of drivers, but it would also free up time for law enforcement and allow them to focus their resources on more serious crime.
There are still hurdles that self-driving cars face, however. The biggest hurdle is the law. The law has to keep up with the existing technologies, and the laws regarding self-driving vehicles are not well formed yet. For instance, who is responsible if an accident occurs? These are issues that will need to be worked out before the technology is used on a widespread scale.
Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn says that the model will not be completely driverless, but this technology does pave the way to a safer automotive era. Sign this petition to encourage Mr. Ghosn in these pursuits and ask that he continue to do everything possible to ensure that these cars become widely available.
Dear Mr. Ghosn,
I recently heard about your efforts to put out an autonomous vehicle as early as 2020, and I would like to applaud you in these efforts. I believe that when self-driving cars become widely available, we will be able greatly reduce the number of traffic fatalities. Whether it be to the benefit of teens staring at their cell phones or elderly drivers who can’t see well, this technology will help us to make the road a much safer place.
In addition, it will help to ease traffic jams, free up time for busy commuters, and improve mobility for those who might have a disability that affects their ability to operate a vehicle. I believe that this technology cannot come fast enough. I want to thank you for your efforts to put this technology on the market, and I wish you lots of success in your attempt to make autonomous cars widely available.
