Target: Sharra Cunningham, Principal of Mundy’s Mill Middle School
Goal: Fire school nurse for reported racist threats of violence against black student.
Threatening a black student with violence and allegedly calling him a racial slur has gotten Beverly Barnes, school nurse at Mundy’s Mill Middle School in Jonesboro, Georgia, a two-day suspension. This kind of behavior demands a more serious punishment than a brief period away from the job. Demand that Barnes be fired from the school for this racist outburst.
According to witnesses, after a sixth-grader and another student were throwing a bag of chips back and forth in the school’s cafeteria for a little while, they caught the attention of Barnes, who asked the sixth-grader why he was throwing it. She continued to ask him that, and when he failed to respond to her liking, she got visibly angry.
Reports go on to say that it was at this point that she pushed the sixth-grader’s head and yelled “I will knock your lights and I will f*ck you up!” Witnesses then say that she said a racial slur and followed the student around “like she wanted to fight.” Thankfully, before this could happen a teacher intervened.
The school launched an investigation, found Barnes responsible for this misbehavior, and suspended her for two days. There is no excuse for a school official threatening a black student with a slur and violence. Sign the petition below to demand that the school do the right thing and fire Barnes for her racist threats.
Dear Principal Cunningham,
I am writing you today regarding your school nurse Beverly Barnes and the racist outburst that your investigation appears to have found her responsible for. The fact that you find it appropriate to keep her on as part of your staff is unbelievable.
According to the reports that are circulating, Barnes physically pushed, threatened, and used a racial slur against a black sixth-grader at your school. I would wager that, if such a display was made by a student, he or she would be immediately expelled. How, then, is it okay for a staff member—a person who should without any doubt know better—to receive any less of a punishment?
It’s being reported that you opted to just reprimand Barnes with a two-day suspension because “no previous complaints had been lodged against her.” Regardless of whether or not that is true, threats of violence and outright racism cannot be tolerated in your school. I demand that you immediately fire Barnes from her position at Mundy’s Mill Middle School for the misbehavior you have already found her responsible for.
