Target: Pennsylvania State Representative Rich Irvin
Goal: Praise dismissal of Republican staffer who allegedly made racist and sexist comments online.
Women are “whores” and Asian professors make “[me] want to kill myself,” according to tweets reportedly made by Derek Greene, a staffer for Republican Pennsylvania State Representative Rich Irvin. After widespread public outrage over these remarks, Greene was fired from his position with the representative. Applaud Irvin for doing the right thing and getting this apparent bigot off of his staff.
It’s being reported that Greene had made years’ worth of racist, homophobic, and misogynistic commentary on Twitter that, after it was made public, created quite an outcry. Though the account he was allegedly using has since been deleted, some of its most tasteless remarks have been preserved online.
“If this dumb blonde doesn’t shut up I am going to strangle her. #NoJoke,” one tweet read. “Katie Couric is engaged again!! Congrats! YOU ARE A WHORE!” read another. Greene’s apparent hate doesn’t just extend to women, though—”This is why I hate asians [sic],” “My teacher is Asian and I want to kill myself when he talks,” and “[Reverend Jesse Jackson] has hurt the black community more than the KKK” provide just a sampling of the kind of racist rhetoric contained on the Twitter account.
In light of this rampant sexism and racism, Representative Irvin bowed to public pressure and fired Greene from his staff. People who have such terrible views on women and people of color do not deserve to work in our country’s government. Sign the petition below to applaud Representative Irvin for doing the right thing and firing Greene from his staff.
Dear Representative Irvin,
I am writing you today regarding your former staffer Derek Greene. In short, I wanted to take the time to thank you for getting such an apparently racist and misogynistic person out of your office.
Alarmingly, views like those espoused by Greene are not too uncommon among many of our country’s political staffers. Every so often, reports of one of their racist, homophobic, sexist, or otherwise offensive tirades on social media make the news, and a short but intense media firestorm erupts. All too often, though, the calls for the staffer’s resignation or termination that inevitably follow are never met, leaving them free to continue to taint our nation’s political processes with their hate and bigotry.
Fortunately, that is not what happened this time around. You decided to take a stand against prejudice and fired Greene accordingly. If other politicians had the courage to do what you did, our country would be a better place. I thank you for getting rid of this reported bigot from your staff.
