Target: North Korean authorities
Goal: Stop the use of children as propaganda pieces.
Nine children between the ages of 12 and 17 fled North Korea for China in 2013. When they were caught and returned to North Korea most thought they would be regarded as traitors as those who leave the country are often referred to as “human scum” in North Korea. However, when news outlets went to North Korea recently, they met with the children who told them that they were being sent to the best universities and were living like princes.
The children also said that they left because they were “young and naive.” To outsiders looking in, it seems as if these children are being used as a propaganda piece to paint a picture of the North Korean government as benevolent and forgiving.
Urge the North Korean government not to use children as propaganda pieces.
Dear North Korean officials,
When 9 children were sent back to North Korea after fleeing to China in 2013, most thought they would be regarded as traitors and perhaps even killed. It’s known that you refer to those who flee the country as “human scum.”
However news outlets who recently met the children were told that they are being sent to the best universities and being treated like princes. This seems like propaganda to paint a picture of a benevolent government.
We the undersigned urge you to stop using children as propaganda pieces.
