Praise Initiative to Educate All Afghan Child Refugees

Target: Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran

Goal: Applaud order to allow all Afghan refugees, regardless of legal status, to attend school.

All young Afghan refugees in Iran will now be allowed to attend school regardless of their residency status, according to an order issued by Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran. According to Khamenei, even undocumented immigrants in the country illegally have the right to register for and attend school. Such an order will give hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees a chance at finding a well-paying job and rebuilding their lives.

Currently, an estimated three million Afghans are living in Iran after having fled their native country due to decades of warfare, with only a million having documented refugee status. While over 300,000 refugee children are registered for schooling in Iran, another 500,000 are not attending school at all due to their unresolved residency status. Previously, sending an undocumented child to school would run the risk of arrest, imprisonment or deportation.

Afghans in Iran face various legal and social restrictions that can prevent them from getting a proper education and a well-paying job. Many Afghans are employed at low-paying labor and factory jobs with little job security and very few opportunities for advancement. A large percentage of refugees are unable to find employment altogether.

By ensuring that Afghan children are receiving an education, Iran will help break the cycle of poverty by setting them up for better employment prospects later in life. This new decree will change the lives of hundreds of thousands of children. Sign the petition below to applaud Iran’s new initiative to provide a proper education to every refugee.

Dear Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei,

Child refugees from Afghanistan will all be allowed to attend school in Iran, regardless of documentation status, thanks to a new order. Even those in the country illegally will be allowed to register for school with no questions asked. It is estimated that the measure will allow some 500,000 children to obtain an education in Iran.

By providing a proper education to all children, Iran is improving their prospects for a well-paying job and brightening their futures. Hundreds of thousands of children will benefit from this decree, and the cycle of poverty will be weakened significantly. We, the undersigned, praise your efforts to ensure that every child in Iran has a proper education.
