Target: Mr. Greg Abbott, Governor of the State of Texas
Goal: Don’t limit the ability of cities to ban fracking.
Citizens of Texas no longer have the democratic right to protect their communities from the dangers of hydraulic fracking. A recent bill signed by Governor Greg Abbott prevents all cities and municipalities from restricting the practice in order to prevent anything from threatening the precious profits of the oil and natural gas companies operating in the state. This bill is nothing short of tyrannical and something must be done to get it repealed as soon as possible because it went into effect immediately.
This shocking bill, which is the textbook definition of undemocratic, allows oil companies to do as they please with the land that the state government has given them rights to. It doesn’t matter if the citizens of the cities the oil companies are in don’t want fracking in their communities, the state government has essentially taken away their voices.
Even more shocking is that this bill comes from a state dominated by Republicans, the political party that claims they want smaller governments and less state interference in everyday life. How then, do the majority republican houses of the Texas State legislature justify passing a bill that directly limits personal freedom? The short answer to this question is: money. The longer answer is that oil company payouts and campaign donations, as well as simple ties to the natural gas and oil industry, clearly motivated lawmakers to pass this bill.
These restrictions are a direct insult to the people of Texas for two reasons. The state government and Governor Abbott are saying that Texans can’t be trusted to know what’s right for their communities. And also, oil money is more important to the members of the state government than the liberty of their citizens. Please sign here to demand this bill be repealed immediately.
Dear Governor Abbott,
It has come to my attention that you recently signed a bill that seizes rights from your citizens in order to protect the profits of multi-billion dollar oil companies. What justification can a member of the party that claims to want less government interference in everyday life offer for signing a bill that essentially allows the state to control land that belongs to cities and municipalities? You have become the big government that you hate so much, Governor Abbott, and you have done it out of greed. How many Texas lawmakers have ties to the oil and gas industry?
HB 40’s only aim was to protect the business interests of large oil companies in your state. The fact is that these protections come at the cost of individual liberty and the very notion of democracy. You have not only become the tyrannical government your party claims to hate so much, you have insulted every citizen of your state in the process.
I am writing to demand that this bill be repealed immediately. It stinks of graft for one, limits personal freedoms, and is also going to do direct harm to the people of your state. Do the right thing and stop this madness at once.
