Success: China Massively Cuts Carbon Emissions

Target: Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China

Goal: Applaud unprecedented reduction in carbon emissions.

China has reduced its overall carbon dioxide output by five percent over the course of only four months by reducing its coal consumption. This sounds like a very small change, but due to China’s size it is the equivalent to cutting out all of the carbon dioxide emitted by the United Kingdom. This reduction comes during a time of transition in the Chinese economy and frequent petitions from activists, including those at ForceChange. It signals that coal consumption is on its way out in favor of cleaner and more efficient sources of energy.

Several months ago, China and the United States signed an accord in which the two superpowers pledged to reduce their emissions drastically by 2030. Many critics in the United States claimed that the wording of the agreement was vague and that it would not induce China to reduce its emissions over time. The reality has been that China cut its coal consumption by six percent and total emissions by about five percent in just the first four months of 2015.

This turnaround has been marked by huge growth in renewables such as solar and hydro-electric power. It is estimated that the Chinese economy, which is not growing as quickly as the Chinese Government would like, will recover quickly from the closing of its coal plants, proving that modernizing the energy industry pays for itself over time.

Ideally this shift will continue until China, currently the world’s largest polluter, runs on minimal fossil fuels and reaches its goal of reduced carbon emissions. This change, though seemingly minor, will do a great deal for the future of the planet and its climate and the Chinese government deserves praise and admiration for fulfilling their obligations to it. Please sign here to laud this giant success.

Dear President Jinping,

Recently, your country has made great strides toward a brighter future by reducing its carbon emissions by nearly five percent. I would like to personally thank you for putting the security of our world and climate before the business interests of your country. It is not an easy thing for such a large nation to reduce its emissions but China has done so with efficiency and willingness.

With your investment into cleaner, more efficient energy, you have been able to cut out almost six percent of the coal previously used to power your country. This has made an impact on your economy, but projections show that it will recover quickly and the efficiency of solar and hydro-electric energy will ensure that your investment pays for itself.

Surely your country will attain its goal of reducing carbon emissions to minimal levels by 2030 and you have done much to silence the critics of your recent climate accord with the United States. We are left to hope that they will match your dedication to the earth and its future.
