Safeguard Vital Wildlife and Habitat Protection Laws

Target: Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission

Goal: Ensure the protection of nature and biodiversity by preserving environmental laws.

The health and safety of wildlife, natural resources, and native habitat could be compromised by a proposal to review and possibly weaken laws that protect habitats and wildlife. Animals and plant species rely on these laws for protection from development and pollution. The public comment period is now to let officials know that we want to keep our laws that protect our wild lands and creatures.

The European Commission wants to hear the public’s opinion on the government’s plan to review key wildlife and habitat protection laws in Europe. The laws are referred to as the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive. The directives have protected over 1,000 animals and plant species as well as preserved 200 habitats ranging from meadows to forests to wetlands. Before the directives were implemented, Europe was losing 15 percent of protected natural areas a year. Due to the success of the directives, now only one percent of these lands are lost per year.

Although the commission emphasizes that the legislative review of the directives will simply result in an update of older laws, environmental and conservation groups disagree. This could become a serious threat to Europe’s nature. The review, referred to as a fitness check by the European Commission, could weaken the directives for the purpose of development. The directives’ purpose, to protect nature, is just as relevant today as it was in the past. We must preserve these laws that have built the foundation of environmental and wildlife protection in Europe. By signing this petition, you are urging the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, to protect the Birds and Habitats Directives.

Dear President Juncker,

The Birds and Habitats Directives have protected more than 1,000 plant and animal species in the European Union. The laws have also preserved precious habitats like meadows, wetlands, and forests. Europe’s wild was suffering before the directives, losing about 15 percent of protected lands per year. Now that these wildlife and habitat laws are in place, Europe’s natural lands have seen a significant reduction in habitat loss.

I beg you to please safeguard the Birds and Habitats Directives. These laws are up for review and I am concerned that the European Commission will weaken the laws for the purpose of commercial and residential development. Once we lose our wild lands, they are gone forever. I am urging you to please ensure the protection of nature and biodiversity in Europe. Do not weaken the Birds and Habitats Directives.
