Target: Saudi Arabia’s head of state, King Salman
Goal: Stop advertising for executioners to carry out public beheadings in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia is in need of eight new executioners because of the recent surge in death sentences and they are advertising the job on the government’s website.
The application is available as a downloadable PDF and there are no special requirements for the job, other than being able to execute “a judgment of death” and cut off body parts of those who have been convicted of lesser offenses. The executions are usually carried out through public beheadings.
Saudi Arabia has seen a rapid increase in the amount of public executions recently. Many suspect that this may be because more judges were appointed and the backlog of cases are being heard more quickly. According to human rights groups such as Amnesty International, the Islamic Kingdom ranks in the top five of countries in the world for putting people to death.
In 2014, Saudi Arabia’s death count was at 88. Not even halfway through 2015, the year’s tally just reached 85. It is clear that Saudi Arabia is well on its way to doubling last year’s number. Many of these people were executed for murder, but at least 38 were executed for drug offenses.
It is barbaric to advertise for executioners on Saudi Arabia’s government website and it only promotes more beheadings. Please urge King Salman of Saudi Arabia to take the advertisement down and instill more peace in his country.
Your Majesty King Salman,
I am writing to you to urge you to take down the public advertisements for eight new executioners. It only encourages more public executions that are wrong and cruel.
Saudi Arabia is in the top five countries in the world for the most executions. The country had 88 executions in 2014, many of them public beheadings, and the country already has had 85 executions in 2015. The rapid rise in these executions is troubling.
Other countries around the world are also deeply troubled by these statistics. We need to treat humans with respect and dignity. Executing those who were arrested on drug offenses is extreme and needs to be stopped.
I am aware that those in the government believe that public executions are necessary for “maintaining security and realizing justice,” but there are other ways to deter your people from breaking the law.
Please take down the advertisements for public executioners and promote a more peaceful government.
