Target: Robert Chardon, mayor of Venelles, France
Goal: Force resignation of mayor for advocating deportation of all Muslims.
France needs to be a totally Muslim-free country in order to solve its problems, according to comments made by Robert Chardon, the mayor of the French town of Venelles. Comments like these serve to validate and perpetuate the horrible xenophobia currently embroiling France. Demand that Chardon resign his post as mayor over his bigoted comments.
After the well-publicized attacks on the Charlie Hebdo offices by Muslim extremists in Paris earlier in 2015, France has been contending with a newly-emboldened culture of Islamophobia. No one in the country is necessarily immune to it, including, apparently, the mayor of the southern city of Venelles.
In a series of recent comments, Chardon called for the banning of Islam in his country as “the only solution to most of France’s problems.” Saying that anyone who practices the religion must be “immediately escorted to the border,” Chardon also advocated for the repeal of France’s secularism laws and a shift of national focus towards promoting “the practice of the Christian faith.”
Chardon’s comments were so extreme that the rightwing national political party he is a member of, Union for a Popular Movement, has set in motion procedures to remove him from the organization. Sign the petition below to demand that he resign from his position as mayor of Venelles for advocating such bigoted policies.
Dear Mayor Chardon,
I am writing you today about the comments you recently made about Islam in France. To be frank, your remarks were offensive and should disqualify you from serving as mayor of Venelles.
Two of the foundational principles modern Western democracies were founded on are freedom of expression and freedom of religion. These are fundamental human rights that deserve to be supported by peoples’ governments. Your advocating the deportation of every Muslim in France and the adoption of what amounts to a Christian theocracy is obviously and profoundly at odds with those rights.
Thankfully, your comments seem to have been far enough outside the bounds of acceptable French political conversation to warrant popular backlash. Your Union for a Popular Movement has already suspended you, and will expel you from its ranks shortly. Clearly your ideas are not welcome if even the UPM, a rightwing party, has issue with them.
Muslims deserve to live and practice their faith in your country just as much as you deserve to. I demand that you resign from your position as mayor of Venelles at once over your hateful, bigoted, and ridiculous anti-Muslim comments.
