Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Stop ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
A bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks has been approved by the Republican-controlled House after months of debate and negotiations. Many opponents to the bill state that this violates women’s privacy and reproductive rights while also disregarding science. There are already several states in the U.S. that ban abortions after 20 weeks, forcing women to go elsewhere for a safe abortion or perform it themselves and risk serious injury. If you believe that women’s rights are being encroached upon, sign this petition.
The original draft of the bill stated that rape victims could only have an abortion if they reported the assault to the police. Pro-choice activists cried foul, stating that the original draft violates a woman’s privacy and could also spell harsh consequences in her personal life. The current draft states that a woman has to receive counseling within 48 hours of having an abortion. It also states that a woman has to have one doctor verify that the fetus could live outside of the womb and then have a second doctor present to take care of the baby. Women would also have to sign consent forms and prove that they had done everything to save the baby’s life. This bill is called the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
Scientists and doctors are in disagreement over whether a fetus could survive outside the womb at 20 weeks. It is agreed that the fetus would need extensive medical intervention to survive, and such medical care would be expensive. Currently, experts believe that this bill will not be made into law as the Senate will block it or the president will veto it. If you believe that this bill is stepping upon the rights of women in America, sign this petition. Tell President Obama that a woman has a right to choose what happens to her body and the government shouldn’t interfere with such a private decision.
Dear President Barack Obama,
The House recently approved a bill that would make abortions conducted after 20 weeks of pregnancy illegal. This nationwide ban has caused outrage in pro-choice advocates who state that this bill encroaches on the rights of women everywhere. I am writing this letter asking you to make sure that this bill does not become law.
Women should have the right to choose what happens to their body, and this includes having a child. Having a baby is a major lifetime decision–a decision that the government should not force upon a woman. Support the reproductive rights of women by vetoing this bill.
