Goal: Install safety technology to prevent future train crashes.
An Amtrak train carrying 238 passengers and 5 crew members derailed as it turned a curve just outside Philadelphia. Reports say that 7 people were killed and about 200 were injured. Amtrak was able to recover the black box that contains information about the speed of the train and what controls the conductor used. Officials say the train was traveling at 100 m.p.h.; the speed limit for that area is 50 m.p.h.
The area where the train crashed does not have a safety technology called Positive Train Control which is designed to automatically reduce the speed of a train if it is traveling above the speed limit. Had this technology been present, perhaps this tragedy would not have occurred. Demand that Positive Train Control be used in all Amtrak tracks.
The recent crash of one of your trains that killed 7 people and injured 200 was devastating. Reports say that the area where the train crashed does not have Positive Train Control, a safety technology that automatically slows down a speeding train. Since the train was traveling at double the speed limit, this technology could have potentially saved lives.
We the undersigned urge you to ensure that Positive Train Control is used on all areas where your trains are traveling so that deadly train crashes can be prevented.
