Target: Ms. Elizabeth Warren, Senator from Massachusetts
Goal: Applaud successful block of Trans-Pacific Partnership fast tracking.
Senate Democrats made it loud and clear that they do not support the President in his goal to fast track the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a harmful trade deal that would allow multinational corporations to take advantage of U.S. citizens. The crusade against the deal, which is often referred to as the TPP, is being led by Elizabeth Warren, a Democratic senator from Massachusetts who believes the deal will harm U.S. citizens and the environment. This deal must be stopped and preventing this fast track option, which would have allowed the President and the deal’s Republican supporters to pass it with very little debate or consideration, is a big step in the right direction.
The TPP is essentially a trade deal between the United States and several Pacific nations that would lift many tariffs and restrictions currently in place. This may sound like a positive thing, but Senate Democrats are opposed to the deal for a number reasons. First, there is the fact that, as it stands, the TPP offers the U.S. no recourse if a nation artificially manipulates their currency to gain a trading edge. Second, multinational corporations could take legal action against countries attempting to pass environmental protections, claiming that the protections are hurting their business. Third, and nowhere near finally, the accord opens up trade with nations that have serious issues with sex trafficking and child labor violations.
This deal is not in the best interest of the majority of U.S. citizens and would only serve to enrich an already wealthy group of business people at the cost of the environment and human rights. Senator Warren and all but one Senate Democrat, who voted in favor of the fast track plan, deserve our thanks and commendation. Sign here to show that you stand with them.
Dear Senator Warren,
I am writing to thank you for leading the charge against the TPP and helping to ensure that the fast track plan proposed by the President was killed in its tracks. I have no doubt that this deal is not in the best interest of the average U.S. citizen and am happy to know that at least now it cannot be passed without consideration and amending.
It took a great deal of courage to stand up to the President, essentially the leader of your party, on this fast track plan and for that you also have my thanks. All too often it seems that politicians fall in and toe the party line, but you stood up for what you believe to be right.
I would ask that you continue to fight against the TPP until it takes a shape that is beneficial to all and will create a freer and fairer world. I think that the millionaires and billionaires seeking to get this deal passed have profited enough at the expense of the environment and common people. Thank you again and please continue the good work.
