Protest Appointment of Anti-Marriage Equality Member of Parliament

Target: Prime Minister David Cameron

Goal: Protest appointment of anti-marriage quality MP, Caroline Dinenage, to be minister of equalities.

David Cameron appointed anti-marriage equality Tory MP, Caroline Dinenage, as the minister for equalities at the Department for Education. Dinenage has been outspoken on the issue of gay rights and believes that they should not be allowed to marry.

In 2013, Dinenage said that when it comes to redefining the definition of marriage, the “state has no right” and that “preventing same-sex couples from being allowed to marry takes nothing away from their relationship.”

Ms. Dinenage also voted against the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill when it was undergoing a Second Reading in the House of Commons. She did vote for some aspects of the bill, but only because she wished to stay loyal to her party line. She did not attend the bill’s Third Reading.

Dinenage said in a letter to a PinkNews reader that “marriage is in its nature a union of ‘one man and one woman.’” It is frightening that someone with these views is a minister for equalities. We need people to champion for all human rights and this includes the right for same sex couples to marry. Please sign the petition below to protest this horrible choice of minister for equalities.

Dear Prime Minister David Cameron,

Your recent appointment of Caroline Dinenage to be the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice and the minister for equalities at the Department for Education is a very poor choice. We cannot have someone who doesn’t believe in equality in this position.

Dinenage is very outspoken on her views against same sex marriage. She has stated that a marriage is between a man and a woman and that “the state has no right” to redefine the meaning of marriage. She voted against legislation that would give same sex couples more rights. It is troubling to see someone in such a position when they do not believe in equality.

This is an incredibly poor choice of a minister for equalities and I hope that you realize the harm you have done for human rights. It is a shame to see someone represent England who isn’t tolerant of the LGBTQ community and doesn’t believe in them having equal rights. We need to make more progress in the LGBTQ community and decisions like this only set England back.

Please make future decisions that will show that England believes in basic human rights. Appointing a bigot such as Caroline Dinenage will do more harm than good in this position.
