Target: Habersham County Commission Chairwoman, Andrea Harper
Goal: Thank town for reaching settlement in case of child who was wounded by police grenade.
The family of a child that was critically wounded when police raided the wrong house is to receive a substantial settlement. In May of 2014, “Bou Bou” Phonesavanh was sleeping peacefully when officers tossed a flashbang grenade into his crib, critically injuring him. The child was burned so severely that one doctor who was working in the trauma unit reported that his flesh had been torn down to the teeth and bone. It turned out that the police weren’t even at the right house. They were actually after the uncle of the child, who had allegedly sold meth to an undercover agent. In the aftermath, officers purportedly lied to the family about the extent of Bou Bou’s injuries.
According to an article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, local authorities have now announced that they will pay a settlement of almost $1 million to Bou Bou’s family, which will help to cover his medical expenses. There have been many concerned citizens, including our friends here at ForceChange, who have been pressuring the local government of Habersham County, Georgia to compensate the family for damages that were incurred on that night. Now, the local government has announced a settlement in the amount of $964,000.
Although the attorney for Bou Bou’s family stated that this case “continues to be litigated,” there is little doubt that this announcement is great news for the Phonesavanh family. Sign this petition to thank Habersham County officials for doing the right thing. We need more officials who are willing to step up and take responsibility for their mistakes.
Dear Mrs. Harper,
I would like to thank you for your recent plans to settle with the family of Bou Bou Phonesavanh, who was injured in a police raid in May 2014. As you are well aware, Bou Bou sustained horrific injuries when police hurled a flashbang grenade into his crib after police raided the wrong home. One doctor reported that teeth and bone were exposed when the child was brought into the trauma unit. Bou Bou’s injuries were the result of shoddy and incompetent police work, and many of us have been concerned that his family wouldn’t get the compensation that they deserve.
However, thanks to this kind and graceful gesture, the Phonesavanh family will now be able to cover medical expenses for Bou Bou. Thank you for making the decision to offer this settlement to the Phonesavanh family, which will help them to move past this horrific incident.
