Target: Mr. Barack Obama, President of the United States of America
Goal: Halt all government subsidies to giant fossil fuel companies.
Giant oil conglomerates are raking in billions of dollars in subsidies from the federal and state governments that are being paid for by U.S. tax payers, according to a new investigative report. These subsidies are not intended to save failing businesses, as many of the corporations that received them had record years for profits. They are intended to enrich an already wealthy group of people who are bleeding the earth dry to sate their lust for money.
It is inarguable that the time for collecting fossil fuels from the earth is over. Scientists have been saying it for years and investors are starting to realize it and move their money into renewables, but for some reason the government continues to pay billions to billionaires to incessantly drill. Why could this possibly be happening? Money and power, of course.
Oil companies like Shell and ExxonMobil not only receive billions in subsidies for harming the earth, they make millions in campaign contributions to politicians that allow them to do it. In the ultimate example of money corrupting the political system, oil companies can essentially buy representation in the government with campaign contributions, as well as lobby it from outside, to ensure that their business flourishes despite the fact that it could literally destroy the planet as we know it.
These subsidies are proof positive that big money has reduced the American political system to the equivalent of a corporate all-you-can-eat-buffet. The system continually places the wants of billionaires before the needs of billions and the only way to stop it is to halt these subsidies immediately. This action will not solve all of the system’s problems, but it is a necessary first step to cutting the corrupt rot from a government that claims to care about fairness and equality. Sign here to demand these corporate bonuses, which are paid for by taxpayers, cease immediately.
Dear President Obama,
It has come to my attention that the federal government has been handing out billions of taxpayer dollars to large oil companies that are making record profits. There is no defensible argument for this kind of behavior and it is a clear example of money corrupting the American political system.
Giant corporations can essentially buy representation within the government by providing campaign contributions and then can lobby it from the outside to ensure that their businesses thrive on the backs of U.S. citizens and at the risk of the entire planet. You yourself asked the G20 to halt subsidies to oil companies yet American oil subsidies are up 45%. How do you justify this? How does this pan out in the long run?
The current energy system cannot hold and when it collapses, a majority of the population is going to be destitute so that a few billionaires can add zeroes to their bank accounts. I am writing to sincerely beg you to halt these subsidies to preserve the environment, tax dollars, and the very idea of this American democracy.
