Target: GOP pollster Frank Luntz
Goal: Apologize for praising racist woman who referred to undocumented immigrants as “rats and roaches.”
A woman referred to undocumented immigrants as vermin at a conservative event called the South Carolina Freedom Summit. During a public focus group discussion, GOP pundit Frank Luntz asked the woman for campaign advice. Her answer included the following statement: “People are comin’ in this country across the borders like rats and roaches in the wood pile.” The conservative audience laughed and cheered in response, and Luntz then suggested that she should be President of the United States.
This woman, the mother-in-law of the president of conservative organization Citizens United, is the farthest thing from what this country needs as a leader. Undocumented immigrants crossing the border from Mexico are human beings fleeing from horrific gang violence and devastating poverty. They’re victims and refugees and, above all, people. They are not pests, and it’s incredibly cruel and clearly racist to refer to them as such.
Instead of applauding and encouraging this racist woman who seems to lack an ounce of human compassion, she and her statements should be widely condemned. Frank Luntz in particular is a very influential individual as a political consultant known for his creation of popular talking points for the Republican party.
By signing this petition, you’ll be expressing your displeasure at his endorsement of this woman’s racism and blatant dehumanization of a group of extremely vulnerable and desperate people. Demand that he immediately condemn her statement and retract any support for her.
Dear Mr. Luntz,
It’s come to my attention that you supported and praised a woman who referred to undocumented immigrants crossing the border from Mexico as “rats and roaches” at the South Carolina Freedom Summit. After she was applauded for this reprehensible statement, you suggested that she should be elected President of the United States.
Perhaps you are not aware of the reasons people are crossing into this country from places like Mexico and Central America. These people–human beings, not insects–are fleeing from horrific gang violence that has led to the murder of many thousands of innocent individuals. These gangs will attack uninvolved families, including children, just to sow fear in the people. They routinely rape young women and force young men into their ranks. This horrific reality leaves people with no other choice than to flee to a place where they will be safe from this violence.
These “rats and roaches” are mothers running away with their children to protect them from rape and death. This woman’s statement demonstrates a profound lack of compassion and empathy for those who are suffering far more than you could imagine. No matter your personal opinion on the issue of immigration, it’s completely inappropriate to engage in this kind of dehumanization and blatant racism, especially of people who are only trying to survive.
If you have any compassion at all for fellow human beings, you’ll retract your statement that this woman should be President and condemn her comparison of undocumented immigrants to vermin. Show some basic decency and sympathy for the suffering people of Mexico and Central America.
