Target: S. Robson Walton, Chairman of Walmart
Goal: Cease taking water from drought-sticken California for obscene bottled water profits.
California water is being bottled and sold at an enormous profit by Walmart despite the fact that the state is experiencing its worst drought in history. California needs all the water it can get to survive this dry spell. Demand that Walmart immediately end its bottling operations in California.
The state is currently combating the worst drought in its recorded history. Snowpack is at a historic low of five percent, reservoirs are drying up, and farmers’ crops are dying. Despite this, Walmart has been buying water from the Sacramento Municipal Water Supply, bottling it, and selling it around the country for an alleged profit of $657 per gallon—all while families in the region are rationing water so tightly that they can’t even keep their yards green.
While other companies have shown the common decency of moving their bottling operations out of California as the drought persists—Starbucks just announced that it would do so, for example—Walmart is standing firm in its decision to take the state’s resources. “We have and continue to work with our suppliers to act responsibly while meeting the needs of customers who count on us across California,” the company said.
Water is needed in California right now, not bottled up and sold across the country. Sign the petition below to demand that Walmart immediately cease its water bottling operations in California.
Dear Chairman Walton,
I am writing you today regarding your company’s water bottling operations in California. As I’m sure you know, the state is in the midst of the worst ongoing drought in recorded history. Why your company continues to use its water, then, defies explanation.
As you bottle California water and sell it around the country at a gratuitous markup, the state is hurting. The snowpack is only at five percent of its historic levels, reservoirs are almost empty, the land above aquifers is literally dropping in elevation as the water beneath it gets used up–and residents, farmers, and municipalities are facing the most extreme rationing requirements ever.
The state is in dire need of all the water it can get if it is going to survive this drought. The alternative is no less than a future California that is completely unrecognizable from the one we know today.
The health and welfare of California’s environment and its residents should be a higher priority to you and your corporation than your profit margins. I demand that you immediately end your water bottling operations in California.
