Target: Ms. Elizabeth Chiaravalli, Kayaktivist Instructor and ShellNO member
Goal: Support protest effort to stop Shell Oil from drilling in the Arctic Ocean.
A protest against the Royal Dutch Shell Oil Corporation has been taking place in Seattle’s Puget Sound for the last several days. The protest is in response to a plan hatched by dock owners in Seattle and the oil giant that would allow Shell to drill for oil in the Arctic Ocean and then make port in Seattle. The protests have met with some success and have political support in Seattle’s government, but they still need all of the support that they can get.
The protest, thus far, has included several kayak flotillas in Puget Sound that seek to raise awareness and may even try to physically bar Shell’s tankers from the harbor. Hundreds of “kayaktivists” from all over the Pacific Northwest have traveled to Seattle to take part and many are even willing to be arrested to protect the climate from the oil giant.
Among those fighting against Shell, and their plans to suck the planet dry, are City Council member Mike O’Brien, who is taking part in another flotilla later this month, and City Mayor Ed Murray, who has spoken out against Shell and its plans. Murray has said that if it were in his power, the port would be focusing more on newer, cleaner energies and fuel sources.
This protest is wonderful, but like all protests, it needs support. It is being run by a coalition of environmental conservation groups known under the moniker, “ShellNO.” Sign here to show your support for this brave protest against one of the largest, most harmful corporations on earth, and visit ShellNO’s website for more details about getting involved.
Dear Ms. Chiaravalli,
It has come to my attention that you are part of a group that is fighting day in and day out against the Royal Dutch Shell Corporation to protect your home and the world. I am writing to say that while I am not personally with you on the front lines of your protest, I support you, your group, and your goals with the greatest possible fervor. What you are doing will not only save the Pacific Northwest and Puget Sound from possible oil spills, it will force corporations and politicians to realize that fossil fuels must not be our focus in the days ahead.
The days of sucking the earth dry just so that people can drive around more in their cars are numbered. Your protest has been successful thus far and I would just like to ask that you not give up until the fight is won. Thank you for your service to this planet and your own ideals, I hope that the voice of reason you, and all of your fellow kayaktivists, are using is heard and understood. I am ever with you in spirit.
