Target: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo
Demand: Ensure Indian Point Nuclear Plant build larger holding tanks so oil doesn’t spill into Hudson River.
New York’s Indian Point nuclear power plant had a transformer fire recently that caused the transformer to rupture. Because of this, oil spilled out of it. While the oil did spill into a holding tank at first, the holding tank eventually reached capacity and it spilled over into a drainage system that lead to the Hudson River.
Although it’s unclear exactly how much oil has been spilled, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has estimated it was several thousand gallons. Governor Cuomo said, when asked about the spill’s impact on wildlife, that “it’s obviously not good.”
Demand that the plant build larger holding tanks so this doesn’t happen again.
Dear Governor Cuomo,
The recent fire at the Indian Point Nuclear Plant caused a large amount of oil to be spilled into the Hudson River, having a potentially devastating effect on wildlife. While the oil did at first spill into a holding tank, the tank reached capacity. Had the holding tank been larger, the oil wouldn’t have spilled into the Hudson River sparing wildlife the suffering and destruction that the spill has caused.
We the undersigned urge you to ensure that larger holding tanks are installed at the Indian Point Nuclear Plant so that oil won’t be spilled into the Hudson River in the future.
