End Exotic Animal Performances in Hawaii

Target: Hawaii Governor David Ige

Demand: End performances of exotic animals in Hawaii’s state fair.

The annual state fair in Hawaii has always featured performances by live, exotic animals including bears and elephants. This year it’s the 50th state fair and Governor David Ige has pledged that he will discontinue permits for such performances. Although this year the permits will still be issued, the Governor says they will be phased out.

Experts say that exotic animal performances pose a safety risk to the public and to themselves as their behavior is unpredictable. If the animals were to escape, local authorities and veterinarians would have no experience dealing with these animals so violent measures would have to be taken.

Demand that Governor Ige keep his promise to stop issuing permits for exotic animal performances in Hawaii.

Dear Governor Ige,

Recent reports say that you plan to stop issuing permits for exotic animal performances in the state of Hawaii. We feel that this is the right course of action to take.

Exotic animals, though kept in captivity, are still wild animals. When they are forced to travel for days at a time, live in conditions that they are not suited for, and perform acts that are unnatural to them, it creates stress and there’s no telling what an animal might do.

Exotic animal performances are not in the best interest of animals or the public. We the undersigned urge you to honor your pledge and stop issuing permits for exotic animals performances in Hawaii.
