Ban Texting While Driving

Target: Texas Governor, Greg Abbott

Goal: Criminalize the dangerous practice of texting while driving.

Texas is one of several states in the U.S. that does not have a law in place prohibiting cell phone use while driving. The criminalization of cell phone use while driving, specifically texting while driving, will save many lives and make the roads safer for everyone. Urge Texas Governor Greg Abbott to pass legislation banning this dangerous practice in an effort to better protect citizens.

Many families have already come forward to share their tragic stories in an effort to prevent future accidents. One such story includes a woman whose husband returned from the Iraq War, only to be killed in a violent car crash by a driver more preoccupied with his cell phone. Similar incidents occur far too often and are entirely avoidable if necessary precautions are taken. Such legislation would significantly contribute to a growing culture of eliminating cell phone use while driving.

Most importantly, a ban on texting while driving will lay the groundwork for children to grow up in a world where such accidents are few and far between. When society is in agreement about the dangers of such acts, and our laws reflect that, we will begin to see a decrease in similar accidents and the roads will be that much safer.

Please sign this petition to ask Governor Greg Abbott to pass legislation criminalizing texting while driving.

Dear Governor Abbott,

Texas currently allows all types of cell phone use while driving despite growing numbers of fatal accidents due to this negligence. It is time for Texas to take a stand for the innocent lives lost due to a practice that is extremely dangerous and unnecessary. I urge you to criminalize texting while driving, as so many states have already done.

A veto on such legislation would not only allow texting while driving, it would actively encourage it. Something must be done to prevent future deaths from this negligence. Too often, these accidents occur in the hands of the younger generation, simply because they do not know any better. Taking a firm stance against this practice will pave the way for safer roads and a society in which cell phone use while driving is increasingly rare.

Car accidents are already one of the top causes of death in the United States. It is your job as governor to ensure the safety of citizens to the best of your ability. Please criminalize texting while driving and contribute to an important decrease in unnecessary accidents.
