Stop Sending LGBT Youth to Dangerous Conversion Therapy

Target: Oregon Governor Kate Brown

Goal: Ban harmful conversion therapy for LGBT youth.

Oregon parents who disagree with the gender identities or sexual orientations of their children could soon be banned from forcing them into “conversion therapy” if legislation making its way through Oregon’s capitol becomes law. This is a necessary prohibition that will benefit countless LGBT minors. Demand that the governor of Oregon sign this bill into law.

Conversion therapy is a form of alleged treatment designed to try to “convert” gay, lesbian, transgender, and other “deviant” individuals from their orientations or genders to heterosexuality and cisgender identifications. The practice has been long-since disowned by the psychological, medical, and psychiatric establishments, and is so traumatic that it often drives LGBT youth forced into it to self-harm and suicide.

Because conversion therapy is so dangerous to minors who are forced to engage in it, a burgeoning movement against such abuse is emerging across the country. California, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia have already banned youth conversion therapy in their jurisdictions, and now Oregon might follow in their footsteps with a bill being considered that would totally prohibit the use of the treatment on LGBT youth.

Too many minors have killed themselves out of shame for who they are for us to just stand back and let it continue in perpetuity. Sign the petition below to urge Governor Kate Brown to sign this bill into law so that no more youths can be forced into this dangerous farce of a therapy.

Dear Governor Brown,

I am writing you today regarding a bill that would ban the use of conversion therapy on LGBT youth in your state that is about to arrive on your desk for your consideration. I think you will agree that this bill must be signed into law as soon as possible.

To be frank, conversion therapy is deadly. There are countless cases of LGBT youth who were forced into the treatment later taking their own lives due to shame. Indeed, the danger has even been verified by academic research, which shows that gay, lesbian, transgender, and other LGBT youth who are forced into conversion therapy experience higher rates of drug addiction, depression, and suicide than their peers.

This practice has no place in your state. Preventing LGBT youth from being forced into it is a matter of public safety and ensuring that the next generation can grow up comfortable in their own bodies. I urge you to sign this ban into law as soon as it comes to your desk.
