Target: Marshall University

Demand: Expel football player for allegedly attacking gay couple.

A football player named Steward Butler allegedly attacked a couple in Huntington, West Virginia. According to reports, when he saw the same-sex couple kiss while walking on the side of the road, Butler got out of his car and punched both of them in the face. Police were called and Butler was arrested and charged with two counts of battery. Parts of the attack was caught on video.

Shortly after, it was announced that Butler was dismissed from the team. The University’s Interim President Gary White said “The type of violent, bigoted behavior reported to have been perpetrated by this student is not tolerated at Marshall University. Period. This is an extremely serious matter.”

Though it’s a step in the right direction that he was dismissed from the team, he should also be expelled from the university.

Dear Marshall University Interim President Gary White,

Steward Butler, a student at your school and former player on Marshall University’s football team, is accused of attacking a couple simply because they are gay. Butler was dismissed from the team, but his alleged actions warrant more severe consequences. We the undersigned urge you to also expel Steward Butler from the university to show that you will not tolerate such bigoted and violent behavior.
