Target: Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Seyyed ‘Ali Khamenei
Goal: Release Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi from imprisonment.
Narges Mohammadi, a leading human rights activist in Iran, was arrested on May 5, 2015. Approximately ten officials came to her home with an arrest warrant and immediately took her away. Her husband reports that the officers stated they were taking Mohammadi to prison.
Mohammadi is the deputy head of the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC), and is active in defending human rights. She is particularly passionate about women’s rights and abolishing the death penalty. Mohammadi participates in peaceful protests and campaigns advocating for human rights, and has given speeches condemning the Iranian authorities for their violence and negligence.
This is the second time that Mohammadi has been arrested for her activism. She was arrested in 2010 due to anti-government crimes, and was sentenced to a six-year prison term in 2012. However, she was released a few months later due to medical reasons. Her husband claims that his wife has a medical condition that is exacerbated by small spaces, and it causes his wife to go into a state of muscular paralysis.
She recently reported to a New York-based International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that she had been charged with a number of crimes regarding national security. She has been accused of assembly against national security, propaganda against the state, and for establishing an illegal group, the “Step by Step to Stop Death Penalty” campaign.
It is unknown if Mohammadi is facing new charges, or if she is being forced to finish out her original sentence. There has been no court date set at this time. Please sign the below petition to support Narges Mohammadi’s release, and to give her the freedom to peacefully advocate for human rights.
Narges Mohammadi was arrested on May 5, 2015, and taken to prison for unclear charges. Her activism for human rights has always been peaceful, and she has never participated in any violence in her protests.
Please support the release of Narges Mohammadi from prison, and drop all charges against her. Not only because of the medical needs that she must meet, but also because her pursuit of justice has caused no harm.
