Target: Daniel S. Schwartz, CEO of Burger King
Goal: Cancel endorsement of boxer and convicted domestic abuser Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Convicted domestic abuser and popular boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has struck up a million-dollar sponsorship deal with the fast-food Burger King franchise. Domestic abuse should not be rewarded with money, even if the abuser is already a popular multimillionaire athlete. Demand that Burger King revoke its endorsement at once.
Mayweather has been convicted twice for domestic abuse. Because of this, companies have been wary to negotiate sponsorship deals with him, for fear of his reputation negatively impacting their company brand. Burger King, however, apparently has no such moral qualms with supporting an abuser. In the time leading up to his recent high-profile boxing match against Manny Pacquiao, Burger King struck a million-dollar endorsement deal with Mayweather. After being asked how the company justified the deal in light of Mayweather’s violent history, a Burger King spokesperson said, “We don’t call him the King for nothing.”
Unfortunately, many professional athletes have histories of domestic abuse, but that does not mean that companies have to support them. Sign the petition below to demand that Burger King immediately revoke its endorsement of Mayweather.
Dear Mr. Schwartz,
I am writing you today regarding your company’s endorsement of the boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. This was an upsetting decision to many, and it should be reversed at once.
Mayweather has been incredibly successful for years without the aid of corporate sponsors—indeed, he was the highest paid athlete in the whole world in 2014, all without a single endorsement deal. Clearly, his reputation as a convicted domestic abuser precedes him, and companies don’t want to be associated with such a morally-corrupt person.
It’s questionable, then, how Burger King can justify a sponsorship deal with him when so many other companies have decided against it up until this point. One would hope that your company would have the sense to not throw in with such violent person. I was not aware that domestic abuse was consistent with the values of your company.
Endorsing Mayweather is tantamount to endorsing domestic violence—it is as simple as that. How you came to the decision to endorse him at all in the first place defies explanation. I demand that you revoke Burger King’s endorsement of Mayweather at once.
