Target: Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson
Goal: Take immediate measures to end the alleged epidemic of sexual assault in the Customs and Border Protection agency.
Agents for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reportedly engage in sexual misconduct and abuse at rates far higher than other federal agencies, according to a recent investigation by CBS News. This is especially heinous given CBP agents’ work with immigrant women and children. Demand that immediate action be taken to reduce the rate of sexual abuse in the Customs and Border Protection agency.
According to the CBS News investigation, CBP agents allegedly sexually assaulted 35 immigrant women and children they had detained on the border between 2012 and 2014. From 2009 to 2015, the investigation found that at least 21 CBP agents had been indicted or plead guilty to sexual crimes, including sexual assault, child molestation, and possession of child pornography.
The moral depravity of these crimes, and the alleged epidemic of them in CBP, is compounded by the fact that the agency determines the immigration status of the people it works with and can decide whether they stay in the country or are deported, leaving immigrants especially vulnerable to sexual abuse and coercion. The fact that—according to the investigation—no less that 15,000 agents hired between 2006 and 2012 were never subjected to polygraph screening before being given a job does not help matters.
This rampant sexual abuse apparently taking place in the ranks of our nation’s homeland security apparatus cannot be tolerated and demands immediate action. Sign the petition below to demand that Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson take immediate steps to fight this epidemic in Customs and Border Protection.
Dear Secretary Johnson,
I am writing you today regarding the CBS News investigation that was recently released about the exceptionally high rates of sexual abuse allegedly taking place in the Customs and Border Protection agency. This epidemic is deplorable and demands immediate action.
According to the investigation, CBP agents are taking advantage of their positions of authority to sexually assault and otherwise sexually abuse the immigrants they interface with every day. This is a disgusting abuse of power and cannot be tolerated. People trying to immigrate into the United States for a better life should never be forced to endure perversion, abuse, and sexual violence at the hands of corrupt American agents.
Last year you enacted a number of “standards” that were meant to combat the abuse of detainees by CBP agents, but clearly that was not nearly enough. I demand that you take more concrete action to address and eliminate the sexual abuse of immigrants at the hands of CBP agents at once.
