Anti-Muslim Group Must Stop Mocking Religions

Target: American Freedom Defense Initiative

Demand: Stop mocking religions.

The conservative American Freedom Defense Initiative is in the news after a recent attack at one of the group’s events in Garland, Texas. The group was hosting a contest to decide who made the best cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed when two gunmen open-fired. The gunmen were shot and killed by police.

Muslim teachings prohibit the drawing of the Prophet Mohammed and this contest was to allow people to act on their freedom of speech. However, it seems that it was organized in order to mock Muslims.

The American Freedom Defense Initiative is considered an anti-Muslim group by the Southern Poverty Law Center which keeps tabs on hate groups.

Dear American Freedom Defense Initiative,

Your recent contest for who could draw the best caricature of the Prophet Mohammed has drawn national attention because of the violent events that unfolded. While that violence was terrible and uncalled for, the event itself was disrespectful.

Like most religions, Islam has certain rules and one of them is that drawing the Prophet Mohammed is prohibited. While we recognize that Americans have the right to freedom of speech, this contest seems to have been established to mock the Muslim religion. We, the undersigned, urge you to be more understanding and stop mocking Islam and any other religion simply because it is different than your own.
