Destroy Invasive Bulk Data Collection

Target: Speaker of the House John Boehner

Goal: Pass the United States Freedom Act, destroying mass collection of data.

Government mass data collection on its citizens could be stopped and all the data already collected destroyed by the Freedom Act. In a secret section of the United States Patriot Act, this legislation allows the government to collect millions of private phone calls from citizens. It was only due to the acts of Edward Snowden that the public came to know the government was doing this. It erupted in a huge scandal, and many human rights groups are demanding the immediate destruction of this data.

The Patriot Act was created after the events of 9/11, when the American government grew concerned that terrorists would hurt more citizens. In an effort to combat this fear, the government passed the controversial Patriot Act, which violated several human rights guaranteed by the American Constitution. It gave the National Security Agency powers that still trouble the nation. This organization conducted surveillance on millions of civilians and collected massive amounts of data. Furthermore, very little if any of the data that was gathered actually stopped future attacks on American citizens.

Unfortunately, Congress is making plans to extend the Patriot Act, and opposition to this bill in the government is weak. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell intends to make the Patriot Act last for five more years without reforms. This is obviously a gross violation of American rights.

The Freedom Act, proposed by Senator Patrick Leahy in 2014, was never made into law. It is time that the American citizens told Congress that it is morally wrong to survey their personal lives without permission. Sign this petition and support the Freedom Act, which would destroy Congress’ collection of phone calls and prevent future incidents of surveillance.

Dear Speaker of the House John Boehner,

I am writing this letter to express my frustration towards the Patriot Act, which stomps on the rights of all American citizens. This legislation has allowed Americans to be apprehended without a warrant, violates their privacy, and otherwise infringes on their human rights. Congress intends to make the Patriot Act run for five more years without reforms. As an American citizen yourself, you should not be supporting this legislation. Instead, I implore you and everyone else in Congress to support the Freedom Act.

The Freedom Act will destroy the massive collection of phone call data on American citizens. These citizens did not know they were being recorded, nor did they give permission. Their calls were recorded because the government thought that these citizens were a danger to the nation. However, no substantial evidence exists to say that the government was able to prevent any catastrophes due to surveying the public. Therefore, I urge you to make the Freedom Act law and destroy the bulk collection of data on citizens.
