Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Ensure the requirement that insurance companies provide women’s birth control free of charge is upheld.
Health insurance companies are using a loophole in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to get out of paying for women’s birth control. A report from the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) found that major insurers are completely ignoring the provision in the ACA that requires FDA-approved birth control methods to be covered without a copay.
NWLC reviewed over 100 insurance companies in 15 states and found that over half were breaking the law by leaving out gender-specific items in their insurance policies that were required by the ACA. These include birth control methods, breastfeeding assistance, and even services related to transgender individuals’ gender transition.
Some insurers impose limits on female health coverage as well. The report found that some insurance companies have an age limit for birth control pills, making it difficult for women over the age of 50 to get them. This completely ignores the fact that birth control is not only used for contraception. Many women use birth control to treat problems such as endometriosis or polycystic ovarian syndrome.
The vice president of NWCL, Gretchen Borchelt, said that insurers are “breaking the law by denying women coverage to which they are entitled.” Borchelt continued on to say that regulators need to do a better job enforcing the law.
We can put pressure on regulators to enforce the law by urging the Obama Administration to hold these insurance companies accountable. Please sign the petition below and let them know that we will not stand for this blatant disregard of gender equality.
Dear President Barack Obama,
Recently, the National Women’s Law Center released a report that showed many insurance companies are disregarding the Affordable Care Act and not providing women with gender-specific items that are required by the ACA to be covered by insurance companies. This is very troubling and I hope that you will take swift action to correct this.
It is incredibly important for all females to get the access to health care coverage that they deserve. For too long, we have allowed birth control to not be covered by insurance companies even when it is used to treat problems such as endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Additionally, it will help cut down the number of abortions in this country.
Please force insurance companies to comply to the requirements as they were laid in the Affordable Care Act.
