Target: Texas Senator Ted Cruz
Goal: Stop proposal to add an amendment to the Constitution reversing marriage equality.
Though it seems illogical and half-baked, in a last ditch effort to impede change in this country, Texas Senator Ted Cruz has proposed adding an amendment to the Constitution of the United States that would in effect reverse the marriage equality strides in this country and render many (if not all) same sex unions meaningless in the eyes of the law.
Cruz is trying to counter the fact that marriage is a civil right. Although the Constitution is rarely amended and the fact that the last amendment to occur happened 40 years ago, the republican senator is still pushing the issue.
It is important for the LGBT community and its allies to do everything they can to silence the dangerous rhetoric that spills from his lips, because although it may be a foolish ambition, it can still gain momentum. Other laws like the Defense of Marriage Act and Prop 8 probably had similar origins, the commonality being the ability to succeed when unopposed by a strong and united voice.
Sign this petition to tell Ted Cruz that his bigotry will not reach the Constitution and that if he tries, he will have you and millions of others to contend with.
Dear Senator Cruz,
It has become frightfully apparent that your call to end justice and equality in this country knows no bounds. Now, as you make plans to try and amend the Constitution, me and countless others stand at the ready to make sure that your bigoted ambitions will not reach our country’s heart and soul.
Discontinue your proposal to amend the Constitution for the sake of marriage equality. Though you may not agree with the LGBT community, the people of the United States are standing in favor of equality. It is estimated that more than 60 percent of Americans are in favor of equality. Plus, your so-called amendment would undo the happy lives and homes of same-sex partnerships all over the country.
The Constitution stands as a symbol of the ideals and principals this country was founded upon. It is not a stage for your personal ideology or beliefs. It calls for a society of freedom, yet all you seek to do is create an opportunity to oppress. Ask yourself, senator, “Is this what the United States was founded upon?”
Regardless, if you decide to move forward with your plans, I will join millions of Americans and make sure that your “amendment” never sees the light of day. Drop the proposal now.
