Target: President of Paraguay, Horacio Cartes
Goal: Grant abortion to 10-year-old girl who was raped by her stepfather.
A 10-year-old girl in Paraguay complained to her mother about stomach pains and a visit to the hospital revealed that the girl was 21 weeks pregnant. She was raped by her stepfather and the pregnancy has placed the child’s life at risk. At ten years old, the girl’s body has not fully developed to be able to carry a pregnancy to term, and her stepfather violated her bodily rights. Paraguay only allows abortions to be preformed if the pregnancy places the mother’s life in danger. It is quite obvious that carrying this pregnancy to term will harm both the mother and child. You can help this girl get an abortion by signing this petition and telling President Horacio Cartes that a woman’s reproductive rights should be protected.
Despite being a healthy girl, the director of the Trinidad Maternity and Children’s Hospital — where the pregnancy was confirmed — stated that she would still be in danger. After being admitted for care, the Public Ministry ordered the girl to be transferred to the RedCross Hospital. The World Health Organization (WHO) and other human rights and health groups believe that the bodies of young girls are not fully developed to give birth. In previous cases where pregnant girls were forced to give birth, these girls and their babies have faced complications and sometimes died. There is recent evidence to show that giving birth at such a young age is a huge risk to both mother and baby.
The mother has requested the hospital to perform an abortion for her daughter, but despite the apparent risk to the girl, the hospital has done nothing to grant the abortion. Instead, preparations are being made to send the girl to a center for young mothers. The hospital is deciding for itself what should be done for this girl’s future, despite the mother’s plea. This is morally wrong. The hospital and the government should not decide whether or not a young girl should carry a pregnancy to term. That decision belongs with the mother and the girl. If you believe in this young girl’s reproductive rights sign this petition. Tell President Horacio Cartes to honor the mother’s request and give this girl access to a safe and legal abortion.
Dear President Horacio Cartes,
The case regarding a 10-year-old girl who was raped and impregnated by her stepfather has completely stunned me. This girl probably had no idea that she could get pregnant, as she was complaining to her mother about stomach pains. Her stepfather violated her bodily rights, and now she could be forced to give birth. Paraguay allows abortions to be done if the mother’s life is in danger, but the hospital that is taking care of this girl refuses to provide the abortion. Instead, they are making plans to transfer this girl to a young mothers center. This is outrageous.
Women have bodily and reproductive rights. While this girl may not fully comprehend what is happening to her body, the girl’s mother can. The mother wants an abortion to be given to her daughter, and your government should not deny this decision. I stand firm with the mother’s decision and I implore you to grant her request. Give the girl a safe and legal abortion.
