Target: Emily Johnston of 350 Seattle
Goal: Stop Shell from docking in Seattle and drilling in the Arctic for oil.
350 Seattle is battling to stop a Shell watercraft that’s destined for Arctic drilling from docking in the city before it sets off on a mission that will likely end in an oil spill. If the northwestern city is anything, it is environmentally-conscious and protective of its surrounding nature.
While Alaska isn’t necessarily in Seattle’s backyard, it is certainly close enough to feel the devastation of an oil spill if and when it happens while Shell is drilling. The people of the area are preparing to protest Shell’s docking in Seattle as well as its exploration for Arctic drilling. Stand with the people of Washington as they try to stop Shell from moving forward with its Arctic drilling plans.
Shell’s plan to explore the Arctic for drilling is devastatingly ironic to begin with. The only reason that the Arctic is safe for exploring is because the ice has melted to the point where ship passage is safe. This unprecedented amount of melting, at least in known history, is due to human-caused climate change, largely from burning fossil fuels. Numerous scientists have warned that, if Shell were to extract and burn the fossil fuels found deep within the Arctic, the climate of earth would reach a point of no return, which will likely result in the demise of the human race. All of life–including polar bears, whales, humans, and animals found in the southern bodies of land–would be jeopardized.
Simply put, the earth and all of its inhabitants cannot afford to allow Shell to drill in the Arctic. The people of Washington have the right idea standing up to Shell and its plans to drill in the Arctic. Tell 350 Seattle, a local Seattle organization gearing up to fight against shell the middle of next month, that you support its efforts to save our climate. Sign this petition for all flora, fauna, and mankind.
Dear Ms. Johnston,
Your organization, 350 Seattle, will soon face Shell as it docks in Seattle to prepare for its voyage to the Arctic. It is no secret that Arctic drilling will mean “game over” for the climate. Shell is a huge cause of the current climate struggle and the last thing that the company should do is add to the devastation and its diminishing reputation further.
We, the undersigned, may not be able to attend the rally that 350 Seattle is planning the middle of next month, but we will be there in spirit. Please use this petition and the signatures that it generates to fight against Shell’s plans to dock in Seattle and drill in the Arctic. As citizens of the earth, it is our duty to stop further destruction of our climate and fellow inhabitants.
Thank you for risking your freedom to keep the Arctic safe. You have our utmost respect and support.
