Target: Cardinal Peter Turkson
Goal: Applaud the Cardinal for raising awareness about climate change and urging action to address its causes.
Climate scientists and religious leaders are hardly at odds when it comes to the dangers of climate change. As a recent meeting between researchers, Vatican and United Nations officials demonstrates the facts are clear and people of all walks of life must unite to address the crisis. Following the summit Cardinal Peter Turkson, who leads the Pope’s peace and justice team, told the gathered crowd that a “full conversion” of hearts and minds was necessary in order to avert disaster.
While Cardinal Turkson’s inspiration is rooted in his Catholic faith, his wisdom speaks to all people who want to prevent environmental collapse. “Pride, hubris, self-centredness are always perilous, indeed destructive. The very technology that has brought great reward is now poised to bring great ruin,” he said. The Pope is expected to release an encyclical–an urgent letter to Catholic leaders–in the summer of 2015. Written by Turkson, the encyclical is expected to call on people across the globe to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Ban Ki-moon, secretary-general of the United Nations, also spoke at the summit and expressed hope that the encyclical would “convey to the world that protecting our environment is an urgent moral imperative and a sacred duty for all people of faith and people of conscience.”
Applaud the Vatican’s commitment to protecting the environment and to a sustainable, livable future for all.
Dear Cardinal Turkson,
People of all faiths, from across the globe, can take inspiration in the Vatican’s commitment to the environment. Calling together scientists and religious leaders at the Protect the Earth, Dignify Humanity summit was an important step in building support for systemic change. Releasing an encyclical urging action to address climate change underscores the importance of this work for people across the planet.
For too long have political leaders allowed greed, rather than facts and conscience, to dictate policy. We are living in a time when corporate plunder of the Earth is accelerating, becoming ever-more reckless and irresponsible. What sort of world will future generations grow up in if humanity cannot change its course?
Thank you, Cardinal Turkson, for your strength and leadership in raising awareness about climate change and the need of people of all faiths to commit themselves to action. It is my sincere hope that this encyclical helps inspire and motivate the change that is necessary.
