Justice for Twelve Research Monkeys Found Dead

Target: Harvard University President Drew Faust

Goal: Punish those responsible for the alleged death of twelve research monkeys.

A dozen squirrel monkeys were allegedly found dead in their cages between 1999 and 2011 at the Harvard Primate Research Center. The monkeys were dehydrated, and all of their deaths were due to neglect. One of the monkeys, a four-year-old female, reportedly did not have a water spout in her cage. Another monkey, a three-year-old female, was allegedly unable to drink because her tooth was caught in a jacket.

The center is operated by taxpayer funds, and is renowned for its contributions to the medical field. Even with its accolades, the center has also been known for violating the Animal Welfare Act by previously mistreating its animals. It went under investigation in 2010 after a monkey was found dead in a cage that went through a high-temperature washer. After that accident, a Harvard official stated that it was due to machine malfunctioning, even though accidents such as this have become a trend for the center.

The integrity of the center has been called into question, since all of these deaths could have been avoided if proper care had been implemented. The reported deaths of all of their monkeys were under preventable conditions. The center is scheduled to be shut down in May, but no one has been deemed responsible for the alleged neglect of the monkeys. Shutting down the center provides some justice, but those who were responsible are likely to keep neglecting future animals they work with if they are not held accountable for these deaths.

The shutting down of this center is not enough to ensure safety of laboratory animals. Multiple people were in charge of these animals and allegedly chose to neglect them, and will likely move on to another lab and continue with those habits. Please support justice for these neglected monkeys. Sign the petition below to demand that those in charge of this center and the direct care of these monkeys are held responsible for their deaths.

Dear President Drew Faust,

Harvard University has a multitude of research centers that have contributed to the medical world and human well-being. However, the Primate Research Center has allegedly neglected the monkeys under its care for several years, resulting in many preventable deaths.

The contributions these monkeys have helped the center make for the medical world are immeasurable, and their lives deserve to be recognized. Please help bring justice to these monkeys, and hold those responsible accountable for their deaths.

Monkeys are very intelligent animals, they should be respect and take care.
