Target: Truong Tan Sang, President of Vietnam
Goal: Protect endangered elephants by providing funds and staff for conservation efforts.
The Elephant Conservation Center in Vietnam is lacking necessary funds and staffing to help endangered elephants after their “Emergency Project for Elephant Conservation” was approved in 2013. The project entails creating management of both the wild and domestic elephants in Vietnam while also preventing harm to elephants from humans in the form of anti-poaching activities.
Vietnam has had a shrinking elephant population due to deforestation and poaching for many years. A young elephant was recently found dead with a large loss of skin, no tail, and with damaged toes due to poachers’ traps. The death of this young elephant is one step closer to the verge of elephant extinction in Vietnam.
Deputy chair of the science council of the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, Nguyen Xuan Dang, has said that nearly all of the elephant deaths in Vietnam were caused by human interference, such as deforestation and poaching. According to a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) report, the number of wild elephants in Vietnam has fallen from 2,000 in the 1980s to about 200 currently.
However, the project has run into difficulties with slow disbursement of funding and insufficient staffing. This conservation project may be the only thing that stands to save elephants from extinction in Vietnam. Support the Elephant Conservation Center by signing the petition below, and hopefully helping them receive proper funding and staff to complete their project.
Dear President Truong Tan Sang,
The elephants in Vietnam are nearing extinction, and they will be completely gone if an intervention is not implemented immediately. The Elephant Conservation Center is ready and willing to use their resources to save the elephants from extinction, but needs the proper funding and staffing to do so. The 100 elephants left in Vietnam need help now, and can be saved if the proper efforts are made.
Please help the Elephant Conservation Center to ultimately save the elephants. The elephants deserve to be given a free chance at life, and need our help.
