Applaud Actor for Publicly Shaming Trophy Hunter

Target: Actor/Comedian Ricky Gervais

Goal: Support public figures who speak out against trophy hunting in Africa.

There is currently a photograph circulating the internet of a young woman posing next to a giraffe that she killed, and Ricky Gervais has something to say about it. The famous comedian engaged in a public Twitter exchange with the woman, sarcastically commending her for killing a peaceful, slow-moving giant for no reason other than bragging rights. The woman attempted to defend her actions, but Gervais remained steadfast in his message that trophy hunting is a disgusting act that should not be condoned.

The woman in question, Rebecca Francis, has posted numerous photographs of herself with an assortment of dead wild animals, including a giraffe, a lion, and a bear. Gervais initially condemned Francis’ photograph of her with a bloody, dead giraffe, which she had slayed. He questioned her morality by reposting her picture and asking what had happened to her in her life to celebrate killing such a gentle, majestic animal. Francis responded by claiming that the giraffe was old and the neighboring tribe of people needed food. Of course, this makes little sense, and Gervais made sure to address this.

Trophy hunters kill mercilessly, with concern only for status rather than for conservation efforts, which is a favorite excuse of many trophy hunters. There is nothing sustainable about killing members of a species in order to save the species. Bragging about killing animals is disgusting and should be banned. Sign this petition to thank Gervais for his public stance on this issue.

Dear Mr. Gervais,

You recently engaged in a public argument with Rebecca Francis, a woman who posted a picture of herself with a giraffe that she murdered on social media. I am writing to thank you for publicly shaming the behavior that Francis is emulating. There is no merit in killing such a gentle, majestic animal. I understand that Francis has tried to excuse her actions by saying that she killed the giraffe because it was old, and the people who live in the area wanted it to eat.

Of course, her excuse falls on deaf ears because she has killed numerous animals for a photo opportunity. Thank you for publicly admitting that trophy hunting is appalling and should never be tolerated. Please continue to defend the animals of the world. You are very appreciated.

  1. Good on Ricky. I wish more people in the public eye, would do what he is doing. Thank you from animals every where.

  2. Those on Facebook may remember the 9 year old girl, photographed and posted by her proud and boastful father with her ‘kill’. It was an enormous brown bear, shot while foraging for food on the Alaskan tundra. Her blonde hair and pretty smile made her look as though butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth but the sad fact was that she couldn’t wait to behead the dead beast with her father and transport her ‘trophy’ to her wall at home. I shuddered, feeling that most girls of her age would prefer a poster of Justin Bieber to look at. There are very many celebrities who give their time, money and effort to assist in campaigns, rallies and raising awareness. I thank all of them but in this and other issues that you have raised your head above the parapet for, on Facebook, Twitter and with other well-known animal advocate organizations, thank you, for the confidence you inspire in giving others the courage to follow. (Mind – I have been speaking up for the voiceless since as far back as I can remember! A long time!) Thank you, though again, for giving time and thought to all these dreadful accounts and for giving your rich and powerful voice to the voiceless with and for us all who abhor what is going on and wrong with the world we live in today.

I applaud all your efforts to bring attention to any type of animal abuse using your celebrity to gain attention to this cause. I do think however that your use of off color language takes away from the point, losing some attention from some who care very much about your efforts. There are many words to get your point across without being crass. I think sharing the names of these people is a great way to publicly shame these ruthless killers. Thank you for all the publicity you give to this cause, I personally applaud you!
