Recognize Massacre of Thousands of Armenians as Genocide

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Help achieve justice for victims of a genocide that killed and displaced over a million people.

When President Barack Obama was just a candidate he promised that he would formally recognize that the systematic killing of Armenians in what is now Turkey, which began on April 24, 1915 and continued for many years, was in fact a genocide rather than simply being a consequence of events like World War I.

The Ottoman Turkish government brutally and systematically killed 1.5 million Armenians along with other ethnic groups such as the Assyrians beginning in 1915. With able bodied men being massacred first, followed by the deportation of infirm men, the elderly, women and children by way of death marches to Syria, there is no denying this was a genocide.

As of 2015 the governments of twenty six countries such as Germany, Russia, and France, and forty three states in the United States of America, have recognized these events as “genocide.” However, the government of Turkey has not.

Since Turkey refuses to use the term “genocide,” and due to foreign pressure from that nation, President Barack Obama is going back on his promise and has pointedly avoided the term as well.

The President has promised to recognize the massacre as a genocide for the past six years. Now in the seventh year of his presidency, he refuses to fulfill his promise. It is time for the President to take a stand.

By signing the petition below you will help combat ignorance and help send a message to President Obama that you demand justice for victims of the Armenian Genocide.

Dear President Barack Obama,

As a presidential candidate you promised to “recognize the Armenian Genocide,” while stating that it is “a widely documented fact supported by an overwhelming body of historical evidence. The facts are undeniable. An official policy that calls on diplomats to distort the historical facts is an untenable policy.”

For the first six years of your presidency you have skirted around the term “genocide.” It seems that you have purposely avoided it again and again due to foreign pressure.

The millions that were killed deserve justice. I demand that you stand in solidarity with the victims and fulfill your promise to Armenians everywhere by recognizing the Armenian Genocide.
